BitTorrent has been around for so many years and it’s still widely being used today. You can find a lot of things including the latest movies and TV series to download on a popular Torrent tracker websites like “The Pirate Bay” which the authorities can’t seem to permanently shut down. Downloading files using BitTorrent is usually done with client software such as uTorrent, Vuze, qBitTorrent or Tixati.

Every torrent client has its own distinct advantages and one very useful feature that is not commonly found is the ability to “stream” which is to start the playback without waiting for the whole file to complete downloading. Just like viewing online videos on YouTube, you get to start watching right away and that saves you a lot of time.

If you’d like to stream a video or movie file from a torrent without waiting for it to download first, here we have 10 options that allow you to do that for free.
1. WebTorrent DesktopWebTorrent has fast become one of the best ways to stream torrents and especially videos online. Because it uses WebRTC to exchange data, you will connect with other WebTorrent enabled torrent services or clients and not standard Bittorrent. WebTorrent should still provide good video streaming.
WebTorrent Desktop is an open source torrent client and is dedicated to streaming video and audio. A big advantage of this program is it accepts connections from both WebTorrent and BitTorrent which means you should be able to stream at the best possible speeds. WebTorrent Desktop is available for Windows, Mac and Linux.
After launching WebTorrent Desktop all you have to do is drop a torrent file onto the window, press Ctrl+V or go to Edit > “Paste Torrent Address” to add a magnet link. Some free videos are already in the main window for you to test. Press the Play button to open the video window and wait for the video to start. A red bar at the bottom will show the buffer status. If the torrent has multiple video files you can click on it and select to play a specific video.
WebTorrent Desktop won’t directly play all content (such as H265) and if it tries to stream an unsupported video you will be given the option to use an external player. VLC is the default option but something else can be chosen in preferences. Popular players like MPC-HC/BE and Daum PotPlayer will also work. Streaming to AirPlay, Chromecast and DLNA is also supported.

2. Soda Player
Soda Player is a torrent video streaming player that claims to be able to handle all video formats, including the likes of H265 and DTS. Theoretically, you shouldn’t find a video it can’t play. It also has a built in proxy to help with privacy and ISP torrent throttling. This feature is free at the time of writing but is planned to be a paid option going forward.
On launch, Soda Player will accept dropping a torrent file or magnet link onto the window, browsing for a torrent file manually or pasting in a magnet/torrent URL. If there’s a link in the clipboard it will be automatically added. The video will start once enough of it has been downloaded, a marker on the play progress line will show how much has been buffered.

In addition to playing subtitles that are already included with the torrent or video file, Soda Player can automatically download extra subtitles from Opensubtitles.org. There’s support for multiple audio streams as well as the ability to cast the video to Chromecast or Apple TV.

An alternative player we tried was Powder Player. It works and looks good but it did seem to stop and buffer the same torrents far more than Soda Player did. There are settings to control things like buffer length but it didn’t help. It may work better for you and is worth keeping in mind as a streaming player.
3. Instant.io / Magnet Player
These two websites are grouped together because they both stream video online from a webpage using WebTorrent instead of BitTorrent. They are very easy to use and require no external tools, however, there are a few drawbacks as opposed to using the WebTorrent Desktop client.
The online services that use WebTorrent do not have the ability to accept both WebTorrent and BitTorrent connections like the desktop client, which potentially means fewer available peers. All you have to do is paste a magnet link/info hash into the box or add a .torrent file, a video window will open on the page and begin playing once enough data has been buffered.
Instant.io and Magnet Player cannot play formats like MKV, AVI or H265 and if you try to play a video with an unsupported format, nothing will happen. They’re fine with H264, AAC and MP4 though so something like YIFY (YTS.am) releases should play quite well.

4. Webtor
Webtor is different from the online WebTorrent services above because it uses standard BitTorrent. It also has an advantage in what can be played and what can’t. In addition to H264 and MP4, major formats like MKV and AVI are supported along with the increasingly popular H265. If the video format in the torrent is not natively supported by your browser it will be automatically transcoded for playback.
All you have to do is click “Open torrent online” to browse for a torrent file or click the arrow and paste a magnet link into the box. Once the torrent has been parsed, hover over the video file and press the play button. Pressing the download button instead will start the file downloading in your browser like a normal file. After a short wait, it will begin playing.
There are some very useful features available in the web player options menu (cog wheel) such as allowing you to select audio and subtitle streams, although we couldn’t get that to work. The copy stream URL button can be used to copy and then paste the link into video playing software like MPC-HC, PotPlayer or VLC. There’s also a Cast button to send the stream to a Chromecast device.
A Webtor Chrome extension is available that will open a clicked torrent/magnet link directly in Webtor.

5. qBitTorrent
Some standard torrent clients have the ability to download torrent videos in such a way that they can be played while being downloaded. The required feature is being able to download torrent data in sequential order. Some clients can do this like Tixati and uTorrent, but the tool we will look at here is qBitTorrent.
Apart from the sequential download option, qBitTorrent has an option to download the start and end pieces of the file first (to help with compatibility) and also to launch the video in an external player from its UI. All you have to do is add a torrent to qBitTorrent in the normal way and check the “Download in sequential order” and “Download first and last pieces first” boxes before starting the torrent.
You can also select those options later by right clicking on the torrent in the list. Watch the progress bar of the torrent and when a sizeable continuous chunk of the start has been downloaded (10%+), right click and select Preview File. This will launch the video in the system default video player. Make sure there are no gaps in the first block of the video in the progress bar or it won’t play properly because there’s missing data.
Another way of launching the video which will work on qBitTorrent, uTorrent, Tixati and other compatible torrent clients is to simply open the downloading video file in your favorite video player.

Downloading torrents might not be as popular as it once was, but you’ll still find a ton of content available online. While many of the torrents available online fall clearly under the umbrella of obvious pirating or copyright infringement, BitTorrent itself is a totally legal file-sharing protocol used for (some) legitimate purposes. If you are a Mac user, here are the best torrent clients for macOS.
1. Transmission
Transmission is definitely the most popular of all the BitTorrent clients for macOS and it’s more powerful than it first appears. Despite a reliably simple interface, it hosts a deceptively large feature set which has made it a popular choice. It runs well on resource-starved machines by occupying minimal RAM and using only system resources it absolutely needs. But it’s more than just a progress bar for torrents. Power users can get their hands on the add-on library or mess with the built-in remote control tools. Casual torrent downloaders can ignore that side of the software completely, simply using the attractive, Mac-style interface and core functionality.
Transmission does just about everything you’d want a torrent client to do, but it doesn’t get in your face about it. It even manages to host some unique features. One of our favorite unique features of Transmission is automatically sorting torrents into different groups based on the content in their titles. It also supports Distributed Hash Tables (DHT) and Peer Exchange (PEX). Transmission is perfect for anyone using torrents for the first time or who is disappointed with their current BitTorrent client for macOS.
Organize your collection into albums, or keep your photos organized automatically with smart albums. Perfect your images with intuitive built-in editing tools, or use your favorite photos apps. And with iCloud Photos, you can keep all your photos and videos stored in iCloud and up to date on your Mac, Apple TV, iPhone, iPad, and even your PC. Starting with OS X Yosemite v10.10.3, your Mac includes the Photos app. If you were using iPhoto before updating, you can upgrade it to Photos for Mac. When you install OS X Yosemite v10.10.3 or later, Photos is part of the update. In many cases, if you had a single iPhoto library in your Pictures folder, your entire library — including your photos, videos, projects, albums, and so on — automatically appears in Photos. Update photos photos app mac. And Mac-owning photography enthusiasts have a powerful set of editing tools in the updated Photos app that’s built into Apple’s latest operating system, macOS High Sierra. These include Curves. Affinity Photo – Our Choice. Many unique features. Easy to navigate. Doesn’t take much space. Make good photos great. You don’t have to be a pro to edit like one—use the Photos editing tools to give your pictures just the right look. You can crop and straighten, remove red-eye or blemishes, improve light and color, and more.
2. qBittorrent
qBittorrent is a free and open-source BitTorrent client that runs on everything. It’s not as polished as Transmission or even uTorrent/BitTorrent. However, frequent users of FOSS will be used to that. The interface adopts uTorrent’s approach of throwing everything at you in tabs. This provides the information you want without digging through menus. qBittorrent includes support for major BitTorrent features like DHT, PEX, and magnet links.
It also includes support for UPnP/NAT-PMP port forwarding. In fact, it provides the broadest set of options in any of the BitTorrent clients for macOS that we examined. Knowledgeable power users will find dozens of settings to fiddle with. The downside of this options parade is that basic configuration of the app can sometimes require an unfriendly dive into a monster mash of menus. But if you’re technical enough that you don’t mind that, qBittorrent is awesome.
Best note taking app for school mac. It has a very simple and clean interface.
3. WebTorrent Desktop
WebTorrent Desktop is an interesting supplement to a regular BitTorrent client. It can function as a traditional, if limited, torrent client, but that’s not its core role. If you used WebTorrent that way, you’ll be disappointed. Its true function is as a streaming media application. WebTorrent uses the BitTorrent protocol to stream any media available in torrent form. It works by tweaking the BitTorrent protocol to fetch data in playback order, rather than in whatever order the network makes the data available.
Seeking even works well, if slowly. When you drag the playhead, WebTorrent reorganizes the packet download priority based on the new playhead position. The player is simple and minimal and seems to support a wide range of file types.
Of course, you’ll need a decent Internet connection and a torrent with sufficient seeders for a functional streaming experience. WebTorrent works with any torrent file or magnet link. Just drag and drop a file or link to start buffering. It’s an excellent choice for quickly streaming a movie or TV show with friends. It’s in beta and open-source, so it’s bound to be a little quirky. But users of older torrent apps like Vuze will recognize and appreciate the streaming feature.
4. Deluge
If you’re looking for a heavyweight torrent client for Mac, Deluge might be able to do it for you. Usability-wise, it may not be the best due to its complexity. However, Deluge offers tons of great features such as support for a wide range of plug-ins, cross platforms, and browser integration. Because of its expandability, it’s a great option for advanced users. Deluge also features three primary user interfaces suited for a browser, a desktop, and a command line.
This torrent client can also be likened to uTorrent minus the unwanted software. Deluge also allows customization such as downloading alphabetically, adjusting speed based on the condition of the network, and scheduling each download. You can also integrate it with either Firefox or Chrome if you wish. Deluge has a lot more features that you can check out, which makes it one of the best torrent clients for Mac.
5. Vuze
Touted as one of the most powerful torrent clients available online, Vuze is definitely among the best of its kind today. Previously known as Azureus, Vuze is packed with several features such as its expandability with plug-ins as well as its user-friendly interface. If you can look past the ads, Vuze is certainly a great option for a torrent client for Mac.
Best Torrents For Mac
There are two types of Vuze that you can choose from: Vuze Leap and Vuze Plus. Both kinds have the same features like torrent downloads as well as media playback. They both support magnet file links as well. However, Vuze Plus also provides integrated virus protection and allows a preview of media files.
One of the primary features that Vuze is famous for is its interface. Instead of loading up on the jargon, it simplifies everything which allows new users to access and understand even its more advanced features. Aside from this, Vuze also features IP filtering as well as bandwidth limiting. It’s definitely an awesome torrent client to boot.
6. Folx
The latest software update on Mac is macOS Catalina. If you’re looking for a torrent client that is already compatible with this update, you can check out Folx. Some of its features include priority setting, download tagging, and upload and download speed regulation. Folx also allows you to download torrent files through magnet links and from trackers as well. This makes for an easier sharing of BitTorrent content.
Folx also has a PRO version that is currently compatible with Mac OS X. It allows torrent content searching from the app itself, which supersedes browsing through several torrent trackers. Whether you are using Mac OS X or Catalina, you can use Folx and enjoy its great features.
7. Xtorrent P2P App
Another great torrent client for Mac users is Xtorrent P2P. Aside from its stability, the interface of this torrent client is also user-friendly and customizable. You can download Xtorrent P2P on your Mac for free but the paid version will enable you to download torrents much faster. Since Xtorrent P2P is a 64-bit application, you should be able to open it on Mac OS Catalina.
8. BitLord
Best Torrent App Mac 2020
Last but certainly not the least on this list is BitLord. One of the advantages of using this torrent client for Mac is its integrated media player. It allows users to play a wide range of file types without any issues. Its user interface is also quite simple, which enables even beginners to navigate BitLord with convenience and ease.
Another advantage of using BitLord is that it doesn’t have to come with any bundled software that is often unworkable. Hence, users do not need to work through unnecessary programs that prove to be useless anyway. BitLord might seem too simple for users who have been using several torrent clients for a long time, but it’s a great start for people getting introduced to the world of torrents for the first time.
Conclusion
There are so many options to choose from when looking for the best torrent client for your Mac. Some factors to consider include safety against adware and malware, support for magnet file links, web-browser integration, speed regulation, and of course, a user-friendly interface. Download scheduling and torrent searching should also be considered if you don’t want to waste your time while using a torrent client.
In addition, if your Mac is already on macOS Catalina, you should also consider its compatibility with your chosen torrent client. Although some people now prefer streaming online, there are still advantages to using BitTorrent to download stuff. Whichever torrent client you choose, the most important thing is that you enjoy using it with ease and satisfaction. The torrent clients for Mac mentioned above are among the best and guarantee just that.
